Location

Pendleton is located along I-84 about 200 miles east of Portland and 55 miles NW of La Grande. The Umatilla River runs through the town, and McKay Creek and Wildhorse Creek feed into the Umatilla River within the city limits of Pendleton. Places that are worth birding within the city limits include Olney Cemetery (45.660119, -118.805039 ) and Pendleton Community Park (45.652161, -118.826432). The River Parkway, aka River Walk, is a paved walking path that extends for 2.5 miles on top of the levee along the south bank of the Umatilla River through Pendleton. It is open to the public year-round and has several access points along its length. A Green Heron was here in 2020 and a Palm Warbler in Oct. 2001. Sometimes, the winter Common Goldeneye flock contains a Barrow’s Goldeneye. A few miles south of Pendleton, a White-winged Dove was seen in June 2007 and a Ruby-throated Hummingbird was here in Sep. 2006.
