Location

On Highway 26, just about 2.0 miles east of the Clear Lake turn off, turn South on NF-42 Skyline Road.  Drive 8.2 miles South to the ranger station.  Check out the campground and the big meadow.  Timothy Lake is very close so you may want to bundle these two locations

Habitat and Birds

This area sports a large mountain meadow surrounded by timber.  The edge created by those two diverse habitats attracts many birds.  Typical mountain species like Hermit and Townsend’s Warblers can be found along with Canada Jay and Red Crossbill.  Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Common Yellowthroat, Western Tanager, Olive-sided Flycatcher, MacGillivray’s Warbler, and Vaux’s Swift are just a few of the mountain birds you might find.  A boardwalk near the campground takes you out into the meadow where you might find Virginia Rail, Sandhill Crane, and Wilson’s Snipe.
